Our theory of change

Understanding Change

There are several important models describing how transformative change happens. Our theory of change incorporates elements from each of them and combines their insights to develop our core strategic approaches.

Our current world system is unravelling.

We need to offer compelling narratives of possibility to inspire and galazanize humanity to re-weave society’s fabric even as it unravels.

Despite and because of the difficulty of this time, we need narratives of possibility that inspire radical imagination and galvanize people everywhere to devote their life’s energy to re-weaving society’s fabric—co-creating a world that works for all.

Across all domains of society, movements already exist with powerful ideas to reshape society.

These movements must be strengthened and coordinated to create transformative change.

We see the work of the Ecocivilization Coalition as supporting and amplifying the wider movement for transformative change, connecting and uplifting people and practices that can help reshape society.

Transformational change requires integrating grassroots community action with system-widecoherence supported bynarratives of possibility

A successful movement for change requires enough intentional coordination for coherence, and enough autonomous differentiation for vitality.

This dynamic, known as reciprocal causality, is what the

Ecocivilization Coalition plans to cultivate.

"This Coalition is exactly what we need at this moment of profound civilisational decline: we need to come together, across differences, to fight for life."

Rupert Read, Advisory Partner

Ecocivilization pathfinders are groups that need to be supported, connected, and augmented.

We call these Islands of Coherence: visionary groups, communities, organizations who are already prefiguring an Ecocivilization.
The Coalition will support Islands of Coherence (IoCs) in each societal domain, and play a role in facilitating the cross pollination of ideas among these pathfinders.

Longer term, we aim to build bridges between 'archipelagoes' of related IoCs and, ultimately,  we envision  that these archipelogoes will coalesce into 'continents of coherence'
diverse expressions of life-affirming planetary civilization.
Transformation takes place in three horizons.
While we envision paradigm-shifting, 3rd horizon innovations,
we recognize the importance of work being done in all three horizons.

We know that achieving systemic transformation will require those working in each horizon to coordinate with each other, creating off-ramps and on-ramps that allow initiatives to transition seamlessly from one horizon to the next. We are committed to this work.

Transformative innovation:

Facilitating transition towards a regenerative culture—

a new life-affirming paradigm

Disruptive innovation:

Changing the scope of what is possible but still within the current paradigm

Sustaining innovation:

Working incrementally within the current paradigm to make

things less bad

Deep dive on our theory of change here.

As important as conceptual frameworks are, we approach them with humility, recognizing that we don't know what strategy and actions will bring what results.

Ultimately we take guidance from our core values and principles, knowing that the process of change will manifest in what the coalition fosters through its work rather than from a predefined theory.
